Young workers can really change things

May 9, 2011

06.05.2011. The first youth seminar of the European Transport Workers Federation (ETF) was held in Madrid on 5-6 May.  The seminar was formally opened by the FSC General Secretary, Enrique Fossoul, the ETF General Secretary, Eduardo Chagas and the TCM-UGT Equality Officer, Elena Rodríguez.

The objective of this first seminar, organised partly by the FSC Youth Department, was to identify the main reasons why young workers do not participate in the trade union movement and, even more, why in some countries they do not want to work in the transport sector.

On the first day, participants identified the main challenges for young trade unionists because, as Eduardo Chagas said, youth is not the future, it is the present.

On the second day of the meeting, three action plans were presented: Young Workers and Trade Unions; Trade Unions Attitude to Young Workers; and Young Workers and the Transport Sector. A round-table discussion also took place on examples of good practice in the organisation of young workers.

The seminar forms part of the Transunion project called Transport Trade Unions Preparing Change – for a Fair and Sustainable Transport Sector. The next seminar will be in Berlin in June and this will be followed by the ETF’s first Young  Transport Workers’ Conference, which will be held in Riga, in September.
