YOUTH & WOMEN ACTIVITIES OF SPKA

Pradita Ningrum, a young workers and women’s leader in her union, Indonesian Railway Workers Union (SPKA). She is also a member of the ITF Asia Pacific Young Transport Workers Network, along with her colleague Nindya Prasetyanta. This is a brief outline and some photos of their recent (Nov 2015 – Feb 2016) Young and women workers’ activities.

YOUTH AND WOMEN SEMINAR

youth and women seminarSemarang, Central Java Province of Indonesia, 20th – 22nd November 2015, Youth and women representatives from all 16 regions of the Railway Company participated in union meeting with each region sending about four delegates to the meeting.

The meeting was successfully conclude with selection and election of Youth and Women leaders for the Indonesian Railways Worker’s Union.. Strong hope and inspiration rest with the new leaders to organize and fulfill the aspirations of youths and women, and also conduct positive activities in the union.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY

no to violenceSolidarity activities were held at various railway stations and work places on 25th November 2015 to support the ‘No Violence Against Women’ campaign. White ribbons from the ITF were given as the symbol of men who support the campaign and we raised the issues with them about respecting women workers and end violence against all women.  The campaign was well supported with workers and commuters taking part, a very successful day.

INTERNATIONAL HIV/AIDS DAY

1st December 2015, activities at various work places were held to support and highlight the Transport Unions Fight to end HIV stigma at workplaces. Information, ribbons and stickers were distributed to people about HIV/AIDS, how to stay healthy and avoid spreading it.

MOTHER’S DAY

mothers dayIn Indonesia there’s a culture to celebrate Mother’s Day. Mothers in my company were given apron to acknowledge that they are not just a worker but they are also a mother who has many duties at home to support their family and communities.

It was also an opportunity for several competitions for women in the region, to motivate them to participate in the union and be an active member of the union.

SPKA NATIONAL MEETING

youth and women participantsOn the 5th February 2016, National meeting of Indonesian Railways Worker’s Union was held.  It was large event, with young and women workers’ representatives participating at the meeting.
